The Charles III district, central Nancy
Le 1901 sits on the second floor of a building in the Charles III district, 150 m from the covered market hall and 500 m from Place Stanislas. Here is what lies at your feet.
A new town laid out in 1588
The district takes its name from Duke Charles III of Lorraine, who had the Ville-Neuve laid out here in 1588 to relieve the medieval old town, by then packed behind its walls. Hence the plan: straight streets, regular blocks, a geometry you spot the moment you look at a map of Nancy.
Two gates of that wall are still standing, Porte Saint-Nicolas and Porte Saint-Georges. Place Stanislas came two centuries later, on the hinge between the new town and the old one. That is why it is a six-minute walk from Le 1901 rather than across town. Since not one of the square’s four sides holds an apartment, the closest you can sleep to it is right here.

The covered market hall is 150 m away, a two-minute walk: cheesemongers, greengrocers, fishmongers, butchers. It does not open every day, so check the day’s hours before counting on it for dinner. The tables in the district are listed in our address book.
Around it, Rue Saint-Dizier and Rue des Ponts form Nancy’s main shopping artery, with its bakeries, cafés and the Saint-Sébastien shopping centre. The church of Saint-Sébastien, with its 18th-century baroque front, closes the square next to the hall.
For cars, the Saint-Dizier and Dom Calmet car parks are under three minutes away. On-street parking is paid during the day and rarely free: plan for the car park from the first evening.
